Categories
The 2026 Awards of Excellence have 21 categories in five groups: New Housing (eight, including housing design, three single-detached size classes and four multi-unit classes), Renovation (best addition, whole house), Manufactured Homes (two), Additional Awards (affordable housing, kitchen, bathroom, outdoor living) and Leadership (builder, renovator and supplier of the year, net zero and net zero ready builder). The kitchen, bathroom, outdoor living and new-home categories are the most photo-driven.
How to enter
- Confirm your membership and Master Builder dues are paid for the current year.
- Create a member account at chbanb.awardify.io and start a new entry in your category.
- Answer every question in the form; incomplete entries are disqualified.
- Upload anonymous photos and floor plans with no logos, a written submission without your company name, and a PDF of your company logo.
- Attach the Homeowner Waiver signed by the homeowner.
- Declare the entry final and pay $100 + HST per entry by card or invoice before 11:59 pm on January 6, 2027.
How entries are judged
- Independent judges score entries online against each category’s criteria, January 11–15, 2027.
- Judges must be 18 or older, work in the housing industry, not be CHBA-NB members and not be nominated.
- Project categories are weighted 85% overall appeal, 10% energy efficiency and 5% proof of the member’s use of the CHBA logo in advertising.
- Entries are anonymous; a category with fewer than two entries may be cancelled and refunded.
Planning the photography
- Put most of the effort into the photographs and written story, since overall appeal carries 85% of the score in the project categories.
- Keep logos, branded signage and company names out of every photo and floor plan, because entries must be anonymous.
- Have the homeowner sign the waiver before the shoot; the entry is not complete without it.
- Ask CHBA-NB (506-459-7219) or open the member entry form early to see how many photos the category takes and in what format.
Not in the published rules
As of November 1, 2026 the organiser’s public documents do not state:
- Number of photos per entry
- File format, pixel size, resolution and file-size limits
- Orientation, file naming and before-and-after rules
- Rules on staging, renderings, AI, editing, twilight shots and people in photos
- Photographer credit requirements
- Date entries opened, and date and venue of the 2026 Awards of Excellence banquet
- Current Homeowner Waiver template (only the 2022 version is public)
Check the entry platform or ask the organiser before the shoot.
Using this as a photo brief
I photograph architecture and interiors in British Columbia, so for a project outside BC this page works best as a brief for a local architectural photographer. Send them the photo rules above, the categories you plan to enter and the deadline, and ask for:
- A shot list built from the category criteria, one image for each thing the judges score.
- Files exported to the CHBA NB Awards of Excellence spec, already named and counted per category.
- A licence that covers the organiser’s promotional use of winning images, plus a ready credit line.
The awards photo calendar lists the other programmes the same photos can be re-exported for.
