NKBA Western Canada Design Excellence Awards: Photo Guide for Kitchen and Bath Entries
For kitchen and bath designers, interior designers and builders entering the NKBA BC/Prairies Chapter awards. Checked against the chapter’s 2026 entry pages on November 1, 2026.
In the NKBA BC/Prairies Chapter’s Western Canada Design Excellence Awards (WCDEA), Photography and Visual Appeal is 20% of the score in every category, second only to the design narrative at 50%. You must be an NKBA BC/Prairies member, the project must be in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, and photos and plans must carry no logos. Judges come from outside Western Canada. The 2026 deadline was 11:59 pm on April 6, 2026, for projects completed between January 1, 2024 and January 15, 2026. The 2027 call has not been published; if the pattern holds, expect an early-April deadline.

How every entry is scored
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Design Narrative and Special Features | 50% |
| Photography and Visual Appeal | 20% |
| Floor Plan and Elevation | 10% |
| Material Selection | 10% |
| Basic Safety and Ergonomics | 10% |
The weights are the same in every category the chapter lists. Photography is scored on its own, and the narrative half of the score is read against the photos, so judges need to see what you describe. Practically:
- Show the special features you claim. If the narrative is about a hidden pantry, a storage solution or a lighting plan, there should be a frame that shows it working.
- Material selection is 10%. Include close details where the materials meet: the counter edge, the backsplash, the hardware.
- Safety and ergonomics is 10%. Clear photographs of clearances, task lighting and work zones help a judge give those points.
Photo rules the chapter publishes
- No logos in the photos or floor plans, and no company name in the written submission. Judging is blind.
- Image counts and file specs are shown inside the member portal for each category, not on the public pages. Read them before the shoot.
- The homeowner signs a release. The 2026 form states that NKBA BC/Prairies “will retain non-exclusive rights to all photography for future promotional, magazine editorial, public relations and education purposes.” There is no separate photographer release, so make sure your photographer’s licence allows that use. Mine does.
Timeline for an April deadline
- January – February: shortlist projects and book the shoot. Winter light is short; plan interior shoots for late morning and early afternoon.
- By mid-March: shoot finished. Gallery within 3 business days, final images 10 business days after you choose.
- Early April: upload, write the narrative against the images, and declare each submission final.
How I photograph awards entries
I’m an architectural and interior photographer based in Richmond, working across Metro Vancouver and, with published travel fees, the rest of BC. For an awards entry the brief comes from the rules:
- A shot list built from the categories you are entering, with an image for each thing the judges score.
- Real spaces, no virtual staging, and edits limited to normal correction of exposure, colour and verticals.
- Files delivered to the programme’s spec: the chapter’s per-category image specs from the portal, with logos and branded items kept out of frame.
- A ready credit line (“Photography: Travis Zhang”) and a licence that covers the organiser’s promotional use of winning images.
- Published prices: CA$1,100 for a half day with 12 finished images, or CA$2,000 for a full day with 20 images including twilight, plus 5% GST. Details are in the cost guide.
